The trailer runs much deeper into Harry's first year
HBO released the official second teaser on September 2. Dominic McLaughlin's Harry arrives at Hogwarts with Alastair Stout's Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton's Hermione Granger, but the new footage quickly moves beyond the introductions covered by the earlier campaign.
The trio goes through the Sorting Ceremony. Harry reaches the Quidditch pitch. Herbology and Potions appear, along with more substantial looks at John Lithgow's Dumbledore, Janet McTeer's McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu's Snape and Nick Frost's Hagrid.
The familiar architecture is deliberate. Season 1 is adapting Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone across eight episodes, and HBO is presenting recognisable book moments as evidence of how much territory the series intends to cover.
Even late-book set pieces are already in the teaser
The footage goes well past the first weeks of school. Harry tries the Invisibility Cloak and encounters the Mirror of Erised. The bathroom troll appears. So does the giant chess board connected to the protections surrounding the Philosopher's Stone.
Those are not obscure details rescued from a footnote. They are some of the first novel's best-known sequences, and several were already major pieces of the 2001 film.
That leaves the television version with a more interesting challenge than simply restoring missing scenes. Eight episodes give Francesca Gardiner's adaptation room for the ordinary life between those landmarks: classes, friendships, rivalries, teachers and the gradual transformation of Hogwarts from an overwhelming new place into Harry's home.
The adults are becoming less abstract
The first wave of casting announcements inevitably reduced the Hogwarts staff to actor-character pairings. The new teaser gives them more room to exist inside scenes. Essiedu's Snape is no longer just a publicity portrait, while Lithgow's Dumbledore, McTeer's McGonagall and Frost's Hagrid begin to define the tone around the young cast.
The ensemble also includes Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Leo Earley as Seamus Finnigan, Elijah Oshin as Dean Thomas and Warwick Davis as Filius Flitwick.
HBO has eight episodes to make those names matter beyond recognition.
Season 2 is already part of the plan
The first season premieres December 25 on HBO and will stream on HBO Max. The project is being produced with Warner Bros. Television and Brontë Film and TV, with Gardiner writing and executive producing and Mark Mylod directing multiple episodes.
HBO has already moved forward with the Chamber of Secrets season rather than waiting for the first eight episodes to air. The network has also acknowledged the practical problem created by a young cast: production cannot leave enormous gaps while its central actors are growing up.
That makes this teaser more than another nostalgia reel. HBO is beginning to show the production model it intends to sustain across the books, one school year at a time.
The first one starts on Christmas Day.
