Lollipop Chainsaw 2: Back2Back is scheduled for PlayStation 5 in 2027. It is the first completely new game starring Juliet Starling since the original rather than another version of that original release.
The timing follows RePOP passing 400,000 worldwide sales according to Dragami Games. The company had also already announced an animation project connected to the IP, making the sequel part of a broader attempt to expand Lollipop Chainsaw again.
The sequel idea predates RePOP's release
The project began taking shape in 2022, while RePOP itself was still being prepared. NADA HOLDINGS founder Joe Teng approached Dragami Games with a proposal for a new game, and roughly a year of discussions followed before development moved forward.
That history explains the unusual collection of companies around Back2Back. Dragami Games remains one of the central rights holders and publishers, NADA HOLDINGS is a publishing partner, and JP UNIVERSE is developing the game with former Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata involved as co-producer.
Jaredwood makes the series' movie obsession literal
Back2Back rebuilds San Romero as Jaredwood, a city dominated by the film business. A mysterious director traps Juliet inside his own twisted zombie movie, while a new threat emerges from the Corrupted Realm.
It is almost a summary of what made the original game culturally distinctive. Lollipop Chainsaw freely mixed exploitation cinema, American high-school imagery, horror comedy, music-video editing and deliberately gaudy pop aesthetics.
Turning filmmaking itself into the setting gives the sequel room to play with those influences instead of simply reproducing San Romero High School.
Continuity without pretending the 2012 team has been perfectly reconstructed
Several important veterans are back. Masahiro Yuki, who co-produced and worked on the original scenario, is participating in the sequel. Character concept artist NekoshowguN is also involved.
James Gunn, who co-wrote the 2012 game, has not been announced as part of the Back2Back team.
That distinction matters. The project can legitimately claim creative continuity without selling itself as a complete reunion of everyone associated with the original.
Juliet is still the IP's most valuable piece of visual language
The development team has repeatedly described its goal as elevating Juliet from a “star” into a “superstar.” Her new outfit, animation and small visual details have received unusual attention during the TGS presentations.
That makes sense for a series whose protagonist remained recognizable throughout more than a decade of commercial dormancy. Lollipop Chainsaw's visual identity travelled further than the game itself.
RePOP proved there was still a paying audience for that identity. Back2Back now has to prove it can carry a new story rather than a restored one.
2027 is still the extent of the release calendar
Only PlayStation 5 has been formally announced at this stage, with no precise date beyond 2027.
The TGS build keeps cheer attacks, chainsaw combat, health-restoring candy and the series' macabre humor, but moves them into a new setting with new enemy types. That is a small but important difference: the franchise is finally moving forward instead of polishing 2012 again.
