Netflix released the full Season 4 trailer for The Diplomat on September 15, ahead of the season’s October 15 premiere. This time, Kate Wyler is confronting an American administration that appears increasingly comfortable taking extraordinary risks.

President Grace Penn and Vice President Hal Wyler are tied to a plan involving what Netflix describes as Russia’s most powerful weapon. Their actions threaten to pull the United States toward war while damaging the fragile peace Kate helped broker between the US and the UK.

The fight is now inside the White House

The trailer makes Kate’s conflict with the Penn administration unusually direct. She warns that a covert military incursion into an ally’s territory has crossed a line. White House Chief of Staff Billie Appiah offers a much less reassuring answer: the line moves.

That exchange gets to the heart of the new season. Kate is still responsible for managing alliances, but the people creating the diplomatic crisis are no longer comfortably distant from her. Her husband is now vice president, and the president herself is part of the problem.

The political pressure also lands on Kate’s marriage. Hal’s growing connection with Grace turns what might otherwise be a strategic disagreement into something much messier.

Four people, two marriages and one increasingly unstable alliance

Creator and showrunner Debora Cahn says Season 4 is built around Kate, Hal, Grace and First Gentleman Todd Penn. Their professional roles are disrupting their marriages at exactly the same time that those marriages are beginning to reshape their political alliances.

Kate and Todd form an uneasy partnership as they try to counter the Grace-Hal alliance. Todd also starts pushing into Kate’s diplomatic territory, which means her most useful new ally is hardly a simple one.

That arrangement gives the season a smaller emotional center even as the geopolitical stakes expand. The Diplomat is still dealing with governments and weapons, but the pressure keeps returning to four people who know one another far too well.

The core cast is back on October 15

Keri Russell returns as Kate Wyler, with Rufus Sewell as Hal Wyler, Allison Janney as President Grace Penn and Bradley Whitford as Todd Penn. Ato Essandoh, Ali Ahn and Nana Mensah also return.

Debora Cahn continues as creator, showrunner and executive producer. Janice Williams, Alex Graves, Keri Russell, Peter Noah and Eli Attie are also executive producers.

All three previous seasons are already streaming on Netflix. Season 4 arrives October 15, 2026.
