Kate Wyler has spent three seasons dealing with international crises while attempting to keep her marriage functional. Season 4 finds a rather efficient way to combine both problems: Hal is now vice president, Grace Penn is president, and the two of them have discovered that they work dangerously well together.
The Diplomat has always treated marriage and foreign policy as two versions of the same unstable negotiation. Season 4 appears ready to push that idea much further, with Grace Penn and Hal Wyler building a dangerous partnership while Kate is left trying to contain both the international fallout and the personal one.
