The first move is simplification. Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are now included for owners of the base game at no additional charge, and CD Projekt's support documentation says the Complete Edition becomes the version sold going forward.

Existing expansion owners lose nothing. Saves remain compatible, achievements are preserved and cross progression continues to work.

September 29 puts the game in two more storefront ecosystems

Remastered arrives as a free upgrade on qualifying current-generation platforms. Nintendo Switch 2 gets a native version, with owners of the original Switch release eligible to claim it without buying the game again.

Battle.net is the more unusual expansion. CD Projekt is partnering with Blizzard to distribute Remastered and Songs of the Past there.

Buying the 2027 expansion through Battle.net will also unlock a Geralt-inspired Diablo IV skin. More details are being held for BlizzCon in September.

The remaster gives the next DLC a modernized base

This is not being presented as a preservation build. CD Projekt is changing textures, lighting, rendering and ray tracing while also reworking combat, movement, Roach handling and character progression.

Yigsoft is co-developing the Remastered edition. The studio has previously contributed to Phantom Liberty and The Witcher 3's Complete Edition.

That work matters commercially because Songs of the Past is still a paid expansion. CD Projekt is preparing the existing game before asking its audience to buy another Geralt story in 2027.

Fool's Theory is becoming increasingly important to this part of the franchise

Songs of the Past is co-developed by Fool's Theory, whose leadership includes veterans of The Witcher 3. The same studio is also developing The Witcher Remake with CD Projekt.

The new expansion sends Geralt to Letten, the homeland of Dandelion. New monsters, mutagens and a chain weapon have been confirmed.

The chain is also a small piece of franchise archaeology: its use deliberately recalls the opening cinematic of the original The Witcher.

The Witcher 3 has become infrastructure for more Witcher

CD Projekt is not treating the game's 65-million-copy installed base as a finished audience. Free DLC ownership lowers the barrier to having everybody on the same content package, Remastered updates the baseline, and Songs of the Past gives that audience something new to purchase afterward.

Remastered launches September 29. Songs of the Past remains scheduled simply for 2027.
