Sonia does not enter Uncanyon because she has accepted a heroic calling. She is looking for excitement. The heroic calling arrives afterwards, along with the discovery that this forgotten place may depend on her.
Graceful Decay is deliberately treating that familiar adventure-game setup as pressure. The studio cites family expectations and the invisible obligations associated with social media as influences on the character and the wider world.
A world that refuses to stay in one state
The setting gives that theme an unusually literal form. Uncanyon exists where several realities converge, producing a landscape that changes around Sonia rather than remaining a stable backdrop for her journey.
Fragmentstone-powered devices let players blend alternate realities into the environment. Walls, hazards and routes can change, but the crucial feature is the ability to pause the transition halfway. The resulting mixture remains explorable.
It creates an appealing parallel between character and space without requiring the game to explain that parallel every five minutes. Sonia has an identity being assigned to her. The world itself cannot settle on a single identity either.
The puzzle design still comes first
Graceful Decay describes Uncanyon as a puzzle-first adventure. Its ruins and temples are deliberately hostile structures filled with locks, traps and mechanisms designed to protect their secrets.
Sonia gathers equipment and fragmentstone devices as she explores five semi-open regions. Some mysteries extend beyond the main path and are intended to remain difficult even for players who keep searching after the story ends.
A different kind of follow-up to Maquette
There is no suggestion that Uncanyon is narratively connected to Maquette. The continuity is in Graceful Decay's fascination with spaces that obey one strange rule and then force the player to rethink familiar geometry around it.
This time the studio is attaching that mechanical instability to a protagonist dealing with expectations she did not choose. Uncanyon is due in 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. No exact release date has been announced.
