Clarkson's Farm: Five Seasons In, the Fields Outlast the Formula

By Yasmine

Clarkson's Farm remains a very good series because its real subject was never Jeremy Clarkson learning how to drive a tractor. It is the permanent collision between his certainty and a profession that does not care about celebrity, budgets or television instincts. Five seasons have made the formula easier to see, and the expanding Diddly Squat empire sometimes threatens to swallow the farm itself, but Kaleb, Charlie, Lisa, the animals, the weather and the harvest keep pulling the show back towards what it does best: showing how one apparently minor decision can determine an entire year of work.

PROS

Clarkson and Kaleb retain exceptional comic timing without needing every disagreement to become a sketch.
Charlie Ireland, Lisa Hogan, Gerald Cooper and the wider Diddly Squat ensemble prevent the series from becoming a pure celebrity vehicle.
At its best, the show still makes complicated agricultural subjects understandable and genuinely compelling.

CONS

The growing focus on the pub, shop and surrounding businesses sometimes pulls the series away from the farm that made it distinctive.
The catastrophe, argument and improbable solution rhythm has become far more visible after five seasons.
