Wednesday — Jenna Ortega carries a gothic mystery that improves whenever it forgets about romance

By Yasmine

Wednesday works less as a definitive Addams Family adaptation than as an excellent series built around Jenna Ortega. Season 1 sometimes combines Harry Potter, teen drama and supernatural detective fiction too visibly, with its romantic material easily the weakest component. Season 2 understands its heroine better: more macabre, more invested in Enid and Morticia, and surrounded by an Addams family that finally matters to the plot. It also becomes overcrowded, stuffing enough monsters, secrets and characters into eight episodes that several ideas struggle to breathe. At its best, Wednesday is funny, tactile, gothic and unexpectedly tender without requiring its heroine to become pleasant.

PROS

Jenna Ortega gives Wednesday instantly recognizable physicality and comic timing
Wednesday and Enid form the show's strongest emotional relationship
Tim Burton and the production teams establish a distinctive gothic identity

CONS

The teen-drama structure can feel conventional for such an unconventional protagonist
Season 1's romantic material is substantially weaker than its mystery
