Squid Game Review: Three Seasons of Brutal Social Satire That Eventually Repeats Its Own Rules

By Yasmine

8/10 — Squid Game delivers an almost flawless first season, an iconic visual identity and a critique of inequality that reaches far beyond its deadly-game premise. Lee Jung-jae and Lee Byung-hun bring genuine humanity and ideological conflict to the final confrontation. Yet the complete series loses precision in seasons two and three through repetition, slow external investigations, caricatured VIPs and increasingly excessive violence. Its conclusion remains faithful to Hwang Dong-hyuk's themes without fully recovering the power of the original. A landmark series, imperfect as a whole but impossible to ignore.

PROS

An exceptional first season that turns childhood games into instantly understandable social satire.
Lee Jung-jae delivers an outstanding performance built on vulnerability, guilt and moral resistance.
Iconic production design, from colorful staircases to green tracksuits and masked guards.

CONS

Seasons two and three repeat mechanisms already explored brilliantly in the original.
Splitting the final narrative across two seasons weakens the pacing.
