Westworld: A Masterful First Season Followed by a Series Lost in Its Own Maze
At its best, Westworld is exceptional science-fiction television: visually sumptuous, unsettling and capable of turning timeline puzzles into drama about memory, identity and violence. Season one remains its strongest balance of mystery and character. Season two contains extraordinary peaks but intensifies the show's puzzle-box tendencies; season three simplifies the narrative by leaving the park while losing some of its distinctive strangeness, and season four recovers part of the original DNA without fully recapturing the initial magic. HBO's cancellation before the intended fifth season also leaves its final movement unfinished. Even at its most frustrating, Westworld remains ambitious enough that its failures can be more interesting than many safer shows' successes.
