Widow's Bay — laugh at the monster until you realize it is already in the room
Widow's Bay achieves a blend many shows promise and few genuinely sustain: it is funny without neutralising fear, then frightening without treating its characters as disposable props. Matthew Rhys gives the series its centre, but Kate O’Flynn, Stephen Root and the wider community give it a soul. Its mythology is occasionally less precise than its references and the final third heavier than the opening stretch, yet the season has a voice, rhythm and cast distinctive enough to make the ferry trip thoroughly worthwhile.
