Onimusha: Way of the Sword — Musashi Returns From the Dead With the Face and Swagger of a Samurai-Movie Star

By Yasmine

Way of the Sword is not memorable because its central plot is especially surprising. It works because Musashi feels alive on screen: funny, violent, vain and gradually less trapped inside his own legend. Around him, Capcom rediscovers a blend of sword cinema, monsters and melodrama that gives Onimusha's comeback a distinct personality.

PROS

An expressive, arrogant and engaging Musashi
Strong embrace of Japanese sword-film language
Memorable antagonists and bosses with genuine personality

CONS

The main plot itself is fairly conventional
Kyoto's hub structure dilutes narrative momentum
