Our review

The Blood of Dawnwalker understands that vampires are more interesting when humanity survives

By Vever

The Blood of Dawnwalker uses vampirism less as a simple power fantasy than as a way to explore a world that was already sick before the monsters took over. Its greatest achievement is Vale Sangora, Brencis and a temporal structure that makes abandoned stories part of the narrative itself. Coen does not always match the strength of his supporting cast and some consequences are more limited than promised, but Rebel Wolves' first chapter has a distinct cultural and narrative identity.

PROS

Vampire fiction grounded in a convincing, grim medieval setting
Brencis and several supporting characters are highly memorable
The thirty-day structure gives narrative coherence to priorities

CONS

Coen can be less memorable than his supporting cast
Not every decision produces consequences as deep as expected
