A rerelease behaving like a new launch

Marvel did more than pull an old print out of the vault. According to Disney's estimates, Avengers Endgame: Encore collected $26 million domestically and $60 million internationally, giving the rerelease an $86 million worldwide opening weekend.

That figure is particularly striking for a movie originally released in 2019 and already seen on an extraordinary scale. Disney says the result represents the second-highest global opening ever recorded for a theatrical rerelease.

Avatar is now only $39 million ahead

The new theatrical run lifts Avengers: Endgame to approximately $2.885 billion worldwide. It remains second on the global all-time chart behind Avatar, but Disney now puts the gap between the two films at just $39 million.

That does not guarantee a change at the top. Rereleases typically generate much of their business around the opening period, and Avatar can itself return to theaters again. What Marvel has already demonstrated, however, is that a seven-year-old catalog title can still generate tens of millions of dollars in a matter of days.

Marvel is also selling the next Avengers movie

The performance is not being driven by nostalgia alone. Encore includes new material directly setting up Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled for December 2026. Audiences receive a preview of the upcoming film, while IMAX and Infinity Vision-certified screenings include additional material.

That turns the rerelease into a paid promotional campaign for Doomsday as much as another commercial run for Endgame. Marvel puts its former phenomenon back at the center of the conversation, gives fans a concrete reason to buy another ticket and simultaneously markets its next blockbuster.

Marvel Studios crosses $35 billion

The rerelease also arrives as Marvel Studios reaches another financial milestone. Disney now estimates the studio's cumulative worldwide box office at $35.075 billion across 38 films.

For the wider movie business, that makes the story larger than the symbolic Endgame-versus-Avatar contest. Studios are looking for ways to monetize valuable catalogs beyond simply placing older movies on streaming services, and Encore demonstrates what can happen when a rerelease is packaged as an event and tied directly to the next chapter of a franchise. Seven years later, Endgame is not merely an old hit Marvel has put back in theaters. It has become a launchpad for the next one.
