Jovovich will play Ilya's therapist
Crave announced on September 3 that Jovovich has been cast as Dr. Galina Molchalina. Kevin Zegers will play Coach Wiebe, while Paul Gross takes the role of league commissioner Roger Crowell. Season 2 is scheduled to premiere in spring 2027.
Galina comes from Rachel Reid's The Long Game, the sixth Game Changers novel and a major source for the upcoming season. She is the therapist Ilya sees while dealing with depression and anxiety.
That makes the role unusually important for a series built around things its two leads have spent years refusing to say out loud. Ilya will have a relationship on screen that is neither romantic nor competitive, and one specifically designed around talking about what he has been carrying.
Ottawa gets a coach
Zegers' Coach Brandon Wiebe belongs to the other major change in Ilya's life. He is the coach of the Ottawa team Ilya plays for during this stage of the story, expanding a professional world that Season 1 largely viewed through the rivalry between Ilya and Shane Hollander.
A new team gives the show room to make hockey pressure more specific. Ilya's career is no longer just the thing keeping him apart from Shane. Teammates, coaches and the culture surrounding them can all become active parts of the story.
Paul Gross represents the league itself
Gross will play Commissioner Roger Crowell, putting an actual face on the authority structure above the players. That role becomes particularly relevant as Shane and Ilya's private relationship grows harder to separate from their public careers.
The season is also expanding beyond those two. Justice Smith and Charlie Gillespie have been cast as Harris Drover and Troy Barrett, with Daniel Diemer and Shaheen Jafargholi playing Ryan Price and Fabian Salah. The wider ensemble allows the adaptation to pull material from other Game Changers stories rather than keeping every subplot attached directly to Shane and Ilya.
The show is casting from a very different position now
Heated Rivalry began as a Canadian Crave original produced by Accent Aigu Entertainment. Its first season then spread internationally through partners including HBO Max, and Bell Media says the series is now available in more than 130 countries.
The company had already described its debut as the strongest launch for a Crave original series based on first-seven-day streams. Jovovich joining Season 2 arrives after that international expansion, alongside a much larger ensemble than the one that introduced the series in 2025.
Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie remain Shane and Ilya, with François Arnaud, Robbie G.K., Sophie Nélisse and Ksenia Daniela Kharlamova among the returning cast. Production is underway in Canada ahead of the planned spring 2027 release.
