Some casting announcements arrive completely intact. Others reach the official press release after viewers have already assembled most of the evidence themselves.

David Tomlinson has officially joined Heated Rivalry Season 2 as Cody Kent. His involvement had been the subject of speculation following leaked or unofficially circulated filming photos before the production confirmed his role.

The name immediately created another question because Rachel Reid's Game Changers novels do not have a Cody Kent.

Cody is the show's version of Dallas Kent

The production has confirmed that Tomlinson's character corresponds to Dallas Kent from the books, with the first name changed for television.

That makes his arrival much more significant than a new hockey player joining the background. Kent is tied to Troy Barrett's most difficult history in Role Model, the novel whose storyline is also being incorporated into Season 2.

In the book, Troy and Kent were once teammates and friends before an allegation of sexual assault against Kent contributed to a public rupture and major changes in Troy's career. Bringing that character into the television adaptation introduces a much darker thread alongside the central romance.

Season 2 is drawing from more than The Long Game

The Long Game remains the primary source for the new season. It continues Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov's relationship as the two professional hockey stars try to build a life together while still keeping that relationship out of public view.

Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie return as Shane and Ilya, but creator Jacob Tierney has already said material from Role Model will also be used. Justice Smith and Charlie Gillespie are playing Harris Drover and Troy Barrett, that novel's central couple.

The casting of Daniel Diemer as Ryan Price and Shaheen Jafargholi as Fabian Salah also points toward material from Tough Guy.

Season 2 is starting to look less like a single-book adaptation and more like the point where the wider Game Changers universe properly opens up.

Five more actors were announced alongside Tomlinson

Brendan Morgan will play Ottawa player Zane Boodram. Gerry Dee joins as Toronto's Coach Cooper. Michelle Mylett is Lisa, a doctor married to Wyatt Hayes.

Lauren Chan will appear as Gen, who works within the Ottawa organization alongside Harris. Nick Stahl is Curtis Barrett, Troy's father and a key source of conflict in his personal story.

Those characters give Season 2 considerably more narrative territory than Shane and Ilya's relationship alone.

The ensemble is getting crowded very quickly

The latest group joins an already substantial list of additions. Emily Hampshire, Edvin Ryding, Robert Naylor, Sabrina Jalees and Priyanka were announced earlier, while Milla Jovovich, Paul Gross, Kevin Zegers and several returning Season 1 performers are also part of the expanding cast.

Season 1 was tightly focused enough that Shane and Ilya dominated its shape. The next run appears designed to retain them as the emotional center while allowing several other Game Changers stories to exist around them.

Success has made filming a little harder to hide

Tomlinson's early appearance in fan speculation also illustrates what has changed between seasons. Heated Rivalry went into its first production without the level of attention now surrounding the show and its actors.

Season 2 is filming with a much larger audience watching every exterior location, new performer and behind-the-scenes glimpse. A previously unknown face on set can now become a casting theory within hours.

This time, the theory was correct.

Spring 2027 remains the target

Season 2 is currently filming in Canada and remains scheduled for a spring 2027 premiere on Crave, with HBO Max carrying the series in multiple international markets including the United States.

Crave described the first season as the biggest original-series debut in the service's history based on its first seven days of streaming, with viewing increasing by nearly 400 percent during its initial run.

That popularity means the production now has a new problem to manage alongside hockey, romance and a rapidly expanding cast: keeping anything secret until 2027.
