The Gentlemen has been renewed for a third season as Netflix begins the final promotional push for its second.
The next eight-episode run is already in pre-production. Variety reports that scripts have not yet been finalized and no additional casting has been confirmed, so the renewal is considerably further ahead than the creative details surrounding it.
Netflix is making the decision without Season 2 viewing data
That timing is the unusual part. Season 2 has not premiered, which means Netflix is committing to another chapter without waiting for its public performance.
The decision instead follows the success of the first season and the company's confidence in a second run that is already complete enough to launch on September 3.
Guy Ritchie says the show's ambition and world have expanded, with the consequences around its characters becoming heavier. From his perspective, another season felt like the natural next move.
Eddie is no longer trying to escape the business
Season 2 takes place one year after Eddie Horniman and Susie Glass joined forces inside Bobby Glass' criminal organization.
The biggest shift is Eddie himself. Theo James' character spent much of the first season discovering the illegal cannabis operation underneath his inherited estate and looking for a way out. He now wants to expand it.
That ambition takes Eddie and Susie beyond Halstead and into Italy, where the organization establishes a foothold while Bobby's increasingly erratic decisions create another problem above them.
Eddie and Susie's alliance is becoming part of the risk
The Season 2 trailer also puts considerably more pressure on Eddie's relationship with Susie.
Kaya Scodelario describes Eddie as Susie's investment. His value rises as he becomes more capable, but the same ambition that makes him useful can also make him unreliable.
Theo James and Scodelario return alongside Ray Winstone, Vinnie Jones, Daniel Ings, Joely Richardson and Giancarlo Esposito. New Season 2 additions include Hugh Bonneville, Benedetta Porcaroli, Benjamin Clementine, Michele Morrone, Maya Jama and Chris Eubank Jr.
Season 3 exists before its story does publicly
Netflix has not announced a Season 3 plot, production start date or release window. The scripts are still being developed and the final cast has not been disclosed.
The renewal therefore says more about the status of The Gentlemen inside Netflix than it does about the next storyline. The company is committing to the series as an ongoing property before viewers have had the chance to judge its second chapter.
Season 2 premieres September 3. Whatever happens to Eddie during those episodes, cancellation is no longer the immediate threat waiting at the end.
