Christopher Nolan's film reached roughly $1.44 billion worldwide after the August 21-23 weekend. North America accounted for just under $539 million, leaving more than $900 million from overseas territories.
That makes the international share close to two-thirds of the global total.
China joined a run that was already enormous
The Odyssey added around $68 million internationally over its sixth weekend, with China and South Korea driving much of that business.
China arrived relatively late in the release schedule. The film had already crossed the billion-dollar line and broken major records before that market became a significant part of the total.
Europe had already done substantial work. Around the point when The Odyssey claimed the worldwide R-rated record, the United Kingdom and Ireland had contributed more than $90 million, France was approaching $70 million and Italy had moved beyond $55 million.
Nolan's name now travels like a blockbuster brand
An international total above $900 million requires more than concentrated support from film enthusiasts. The Odyssey is behaving like broad commercial entertainment across many territories.
The cast helps. Matt Damon leads an ensemble containing Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron, while the underlying story comes from one of the most widely circulated works of classical literature.
Nolan himself has also become part of the commercial proposition. Oppenheimer strengthened a pattern already visible with Inception, Interstellar and the Dark Knight films: audiences are increasingly sold the director's name alongside the premise.
Its R rating makes the overseas split even more important
The Odyssey has passed Deadpool & Wolverine to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie worldwide, moving beyond that film's $1.338 billion global finish.
Deadpool & Wolverine still holds the stronger North American number. The Odyssey's record therefore depends heavily on its international performance rather than simply reproducing the domestic behavior of the previous champion.
The same global run has also made The Odyssey Nolan's highest-grossing movie, overtaking The Dark Knight Rises.
It is still only No. 2 for 2026
Spider-Man: Brand New Day remains the year's dominant theatrical release with more than $2.2 billion worldwide.
The gap is large, but the comparison also shows how unusual Nolan's result is. The Odyssey runs 172 minutes, carries an R rating in the United States and sells ancient mythology as a premium-screen spectacle.
Its $1.44 billion worldwide figure is not yet final. The film continues to play in North America and across international markets.
