Disney has confirmed September 23 as the Disney+ premiere date for Toy Story 5.
The timing gives the movie a little over three months between its theatrical opening and subscription-streaming debut. It also arrives after the film crossed the $1 billion mark globally, rather than using streaming as an early escape route from a weak box office run.
Disney is moving through each release window quickly
Toy Story 5 opened theatrically on June 19. Disney then scheduled its digital release for August 18 and Blu-ray for September 22, with Disney+ following one day later.
That sequence gives the film distinct theatrical, transactional and subscription phases while keeping the entire cycle contained within roughly one summer.
For Disney, the billion-dollar result makes that transition especially comfortable. Toy Story remains valuable as a theatrical brand before becoming another major reason to keep families inside the Disney+ ecosystem.
Its streaming debut fits the movie's joke almost too well
The fifth film is built around a conflict between physical toys and digital attention. Bonnie receives Lilypad, a frog-shaped tablet voiced by Greta Lee, and the device begins displacing the toys from her playtime.
Woody, Buzz and Jessie are therefore competing with a screen rather than another conventional rival toy. Watching that story on a tablet through Disney+ will add a fairly obvious extra layer to the premise.
Andrew Stanton directed the film, with Kenna Harris serving as co-director. Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cusack return as Woody, Buzz and Jessie, and Randy Newman again provides the score.
Five movies, one streaming home
The franchise has repeatedly looked as if it had reached an ending. Toy Story 3 closed Andy's chapter, while Toy Story 4 sent Woody away from the group.
Toy Story 5 nevertheless turned another return into a billion-dollar theatrical release. Its Disney+ arrival will now place the fifth feature alongside the earlier films and the franchise's shorts and specials already available on the service.
Disney is also using the announcement to promote a new piano-version music video for Taylor Swift's original song I Knew It, I Knew You, featuring footage from the movie.
Toy Story 5 begins streaming September 23.
