This is no longer an upcoming catalog date. Disney is now promoting Toy Story 5 as streaming on Disney+, and the film has its own active title page on the service.
The streaming release follows a substantial theatrical run. Disney said in August that the movie had passed $1.1 billion worldwide. That figure comes from the studio's own release, although the film's passage beyond the billion-dollar mark was also reported independently by entertainment trade publications.
The newest threat to playtime has a screen
Pixar's central idea is neatly summarized by its own “Toy Meets Tech” tagline. Bonnie receives Lilypad, a frog-shaped smart tablet voiced by Greta Lee. Jessie, Buzz, Woody and the rest of the toys are suddenly competing with something that is not really another toy at all.
Pixar's character material makes that conflict explicit. Lilypad encourages Bonnie to communicate with her dance-class friends through a service called The Pond, while Bonnie begins questioning whether she is getting too old for conventional playtime.
Jessie has taken over as sheriff in Bonnie's room and sits close to the center of the story. Woody, who left with Bo Peep at the end of Toy Story 4, is drawn back into the group's orbit and once again teams up with Buzz.
Andrew Stanton takes charge of a franchise he already knows intimately
Toy Story 5 is directed by Andrew Stanton and co-directed by Kenna Harris. Stanton's connection to the series goes back through the previous Toy Story films, alongside his directing work on Pixar titles including Finding Nemo and WALL-E.
Tom Hanks returns as Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear and Joan Cusack as Jessie. Greta Lee voices Lilypad, Conan O'Brien plays Smarty Pants and Tony Hale returns as Forky.
Randy Newman is back to score his fifth Toy Story feature. Disney also credits the film with the original song I Knew It, I Knew You, performed by Taylor Swift and written and produced by Swift and Jack Antonoff.
Disney+ gets another major entry in one of its strongest catalog franchises
Disney says Toy Story is the most-watched film franchise on Disney+, with more than two billion hours streamed globally. That is a company-supplied metric rather than an independently audited streaming measurement, but it helps explain why the fifth movie matters well beyond a routine catalog addition.
Toy Story 5 now sits beside the earlier films in the Disney+ collection, giving the company a way to turn a recent theatrical release into renewed attention for a franchise whose first movie arrived in 1995.
Disney is extending the launch outside the streaming app
The company is also marking the Disney+ debut with Toy Story 5: The Great Toy Rescue, a limited Fortnite activation that began September 22 and is scheduled to run through October 5 across multiple participating creator-made islands.
There is an amusing symmetry to the campaign. Toy Story 5 is about physical toys trying to survive a child's increasingly digital world, and Disney is extending that story through both a streaming platform and an online game.
The practical part is straightforward: the 102-minute Toy Story 5 is now available on Disney+, bringing Woody, Buzz and Jessie back into the same streaming collection as the films that came before it.
