The fourth installment of the Monster crime anthology, focusing on Lizzie Borden and starring Ella Beatty.
Netflix has changed the century, the gender of its central subject and almost the entire cast, but Monster still knows how to open quickly. The Lizzie Borden Story debuted at No. 1 on the global English TV chart with 12.1 million views. After Jeffrey Dahmer, the Menendez brothers and Ed Gein, the anthology is showing that its audience may now be attached as much to the Monster label as to any individual criminal case.
Lizzie Borden was tried and acquitted in 1893. The murders of her father and stepmother have never been conclusively solved. Monster is taking a far less agnostic approach. Its fourth season puts Ella Beatty at the center of the bloodshed and treats the famous case less as a whodunit than as the origin story of a woman transformed into cultural myth.
Netflix is taking Monster back to 1892. Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story arrives September 17, with Ella Beatty playing the Massachusetts woman who was tried and acquitted after the killings of her father and stepmother.
