Spider-Noir is strongest when it stops asking whether Spider-Man belongs inside film noir and simply behaves as though the answer had always been obvious. The monochrome photography, production design, score and Nicolas Cage give the series a personality rarely this pronounced in recent superhero television. The writing is less daring: some villains are thin and parts of the investigation settle into familiar machinery. Across eight episodes, though, the peculiar combination works remarkably well. Its cancellation after a single season now makes the whole experiment feel even stranger.
