Our review

Spider-Man: Brand New Day: Peter Parker finally grows up, the MCU much less so

Brand New Day is a very good Spider-Man film trapped inside a more conventional Marvel blockbuster. Destin Daniel Cretton understands that Peter Parker is compelling when his powers complicate an already fragile life, and Tom Holland finally brings genuine weight to the role. Zendaya and several remarkably physical action sequences lift the movie considerably. It slips whenever the MCU requires this intimate story to become a junction toward the next one. This is not quite the radical reset promised by the title, but it is probably the best direction this Spider-Man could have taken after No Way Home.

PROS

Tom Holland finds a more mature and melancholic Peter Parker
Zendaya gives the intimate scenes substantial weight
Destin Daniel Cretton stages several excellent physical action sequences

CONS

Several strong ideas are abandoned too quickly
Less convincing final act
