The movie remained No. 1 for a sixth consecutive weekend, earning roughly $18 million over the traditional three-day frame and about $23.3 million across the extended Labor Day period.

That pushes its domestic total to approximately $923 million. Star Wars: The Force Awakens holds the nominal North American record at about $936.7 million.

The gap is now only around $13.7 million.

Star Wars is suddenly within reach

For more than a decade, The Force Awakens occupied a peculiar position at the domestic box office. Several movies became larger worldwide hits, but none managed to overtake its North American total.

Brand New Day has already reached one milestone faster. It crossed $900 million domestically in 36 days, while The Force Awakens took 50 days to reach that mark.

There is an important qualification. These rankings use nominal box-office revenue rather than inflation-adjusted admissions. A ticket sold in 2026 is not economically equivalent to one sold in 2015.

On the industry's standard unadjusted chart, however, Spider-Man is almost there.

The worldwide number is already enormous

Brand New Day has also moved beyond $2.4 billion globally, placing it among the highest-grossing movies ever released in nominal dollars.

That follows an extraordinary opening. Sony reported a $360 million domestic debut and roughly $932 million worldwide during the film's first weekend.

The more unusual part came afterward. Huge openings often burn through demand quickly. Brand New Day instead kept the No. 1 domestic position for six straight weekends.

Sony has more than a Marvel hit

The result matters particularly to Sony Pictures. Spider-Man remains the studio's most important theatrical franchise, but the current series operates through the unusual partnership that places Tom Holland's Peter Parker inside Marvel Studios' wider cinematic universe.

Destin Daniel Cretton took over directing duties for the new chapter, with Holland joined by Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Sadie Sink, Michael Mando, Tramell Tillman and Mark Ruffalo.

Brand New Day arrived in US theaters on July 31 after opening in France on July 29.

The No. 1 streak may end before the record chase does

Practical Magic 2 is expected to provide enough competition to end Spider-Man's run at the top of the weekend chart.

The record itself requires much less. Brand New Day does not need another spectacular weekend. Roughly $13.7 million in additional domestic business would put it beyond The Force Awakens on the unadjusted chart.

After six weekends at No. 1, that is no longer a distant theoretical target.
