Bodycam is turning its viral visual trick into an actual design language

For most people, Bodycam arrived first as an image: warped lens, unstable framing, crushed highlights and a rifle moving with a body rather than floating beneath a conventional FPS camera. Version 0.8 is Reissad Studio's attempt to make the rest of the game speak that same language.

Our review

Bodycam turns the FPS into found footage, and that remains its smartest idea

By Vever

Bodycam's greatest achievement is the way it changes how a familiar genre feels. The same corridor, rifle and duel become unsettling when the image resembles evidence rather than heroic spectacle. That idea is strong enough to create dozens of memorable moments, but not yet to carry the whole experience: the modes remain conventional and there is barely a world beyond the firefights. Locked & Loaded gives the game substantially more substance without eliminating that imbalance. Bodycam has an aesthetic that says something; it is still looking for a structure capable of answering it.

PROS

An audiovisual identity that is impossible to confuse with a conventional FPS
Violence is abrupt rather than heroically staged
Darkness and sound create a genuine sense of fear

CONS

No real narrative or context strong enough to extend the atmosphere
Familiar multiplayer modes eventually expose the conventional structure underneath
