The September 3 launch trailer arrives less than two weeks before Marvel's Wolverine reaches PlayStation 5. Its emphasis is not simply on claws. It is on the people standing around the man using them.
Insomniac is telling an original Wolverine story rather than adapting a particular comic, movie or animated plot. Logan is chasing secrets from a past he cannot fully reconstruct while Bolivar Trask escalates a campaign against mutantkind.
Jean Grey gives the lone wolf somebody to answer to
Jean Grey is positioned as an active partner during parts of Logan's journey. Her presence immediately changes the emotional geometry of a Wolverine story: Logan can disappear from strangers, but it is harder to hide behind silence when the person beside him can read far more than body language.
Team X pulls in another part of his history. The story takes place three years after Logan walked away from the mutant task force, only for events surrounding Trask to draw him back toward people and responsibilities he left behind.
That gives the game several versions of Wolverine to interrogate at once. There is the man Logan believes he has become, the weapon other people remember, and the missing history he is still trying to recover.
The villains are pieces of that history too
Sabretooth, Deathstrike and Omega Red are all part of the announced roster. Mystique occupies a less predictable position, while the Reavers and The Hand connect the story to very different corners of Wolverine's mythology.
Bolivar Trask provides the wider political threat. His anti-mutant campaign and Sentinel program take Logan's personal search and place it inside a crisis affecting a mutant population that Insomniac describes as too scattered to rely on established safe havens or heroic teams.
This Wolverine is allowed to be uglier
The tonal break from Insomniac's Spider-Man games is visible in the combat. Wolverine is violent, bloody and capable of dismembering enemies with adamantium claws.
That brutality is not mandatory at its maximum intensity. Violence settings can alter dynamic blood and dismemberment, part of a wider accessibility suite that Insomniac has built into the game.
The world structure changes too. Marvel's Wolverine is not an open-world game, despite traveling through locations including Madripoor, Canada and Tokyo.
One character, several visual histories
Insomniac's official cover was created with comic artist Jock, using the yellow-and-black visual identity that immediately marks the game as Wolverine even before the claws enter frame.
Unlockable outfits reach much further. Weapon X, Old Man Logan, Ultimate Wolverine and Patch are among the inspirations confirmed so far, with additional material drawn from comics, animation and film.
Liam McIntyre plays Logan, with Krizia Bajos as Jean Grey. Marvel's Wolverine launches exclusively for PlayStation 5 on September 15, 2026.
