There is no neutral version of Wolverine anymore. Comics readers have Weapon X, Patch, Old Man Logan and countless other incarnations in their heads. Movie audiences spent decades associating the character with Hugh Jackman. Even the yellow suit carries its own history.

Insomniac's answer is not to reproduce one of those stories. Marvel's Wolverine tells an original one.

Logan returns to a mutant crisis

The game begins after Logan has spent three years away from Team X. Bolivar Trask is targeting mutants and the cybernetic Reavers are doing the dirty work, dragging Wolverine back toward the group he left behind.

Jean Grey is involved in the same struggle, while Insomniac has also brought recognizable names including Mystique and Omega Red into Logan's orbit. The result is packed with familiar Marvel material without functioning as a direct adaptation of a film or one famous comic storyline.

Liam McIntyre voices Logan in this version. The game also sits in the wider continuity established by Insomniac's Marvel titles, although PlayStation presents it as a self-contained adventure that does not require a Spider-Man history lesson first.

A wardrobe built from Wolverine history

The references become especially visible through the suits. Insomniac has highlighted designs inspired by Weapon X, Old Man Logan, Ultimate Wolverine and Patch, alongside influences from animation and other corners of the character's history.

It is fan service, but unusually appropriate fan service. Wolverine has spent decades being redesigned, deconstructed and put back together. Treating those identities as something players can visibly move between fits the character better than pretending one costume settled the argument forever.

Insomniac makes brutality part of the adaptation

The studio's largest departure from Spider-Man is physical. Wolverine fights at arm's length with claws, kicks, Rage and a healing factor integrated directly into combat. Blood and dismemberment are part of the game's visual language rather than something hidden around the edges.

Players can reduce some of that violence through dedicated settings. That does not change the character Insomniac has built; it simply changes how explicitly the game shows what his claws do.

Canada, Tokyo and Madripoor provide the major geographic stops. That last name in particular should sound comfortably familiar to Wolverine readers. Marvel's Wolverine is not trying to replace all the Logans that came before it. It launches by adding another one.
